Get Fit & Hike – Red Town to Waterfalls
March 18 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Schedule: 10:00 a.m. in the Red Town trail head parking lot
- Capacity: 12 people limit, including guests
- Activity Status: Vaccination required
- Location: Red Town Trail Head at Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. Meet at the covered kiosk at the end of the parking lot, across from the Honey Bucket toilet.
Hike a loop from the Red Town Trailhead to Coal Creek Falls via Wildside, Indian, and Quarry Trails. On the way to the falls, see a historic mine shaft and meadow historically used by coal miners to play baseball. After the waterfall, divert to the Military Road Trail passing by the small historic Red Town dam. This portion of our hike is moderate, about 4.5 miles with 200 feet elevation gain (not including ups and downs).
After returning to the parking lot, we’ll cross the main road to the Coal Creek Nature Area to stroll an interpretive trail loop with historic markers, to a second water fall and long benches as a lunch spot. This
portion is an easy, .5 mile round trip with negligible elevation gain.
Optional: Depending on time and weather, some of the group may want to extend the hiking day to do the Primrose Trail loop along Coal Creek before finally returning to the parking lot. This portion is easy to moderate, 3.4 miles, about 200 ft. net elevation gain and will take approximately 2 hrs.
Wear trail shoes or hiking boots. Bring basic first aid, water, lunch. Trekking poles are helpful for slippery muddy patches. Dogs are allowed on leash.
